"Cozy" gets dismissed as a soft genre for people who can't handle tension. That misses what cozy actually is: a contract between the work and the viewer that says you are safe here, and nothing will demand more than you want to give.
The three marks of cozy
Safety. No sudden cruelty. Conflict, if any, is gentle and recoverable. A cozy game lets you tend a garden; it does not ambush you.
Pace. The work waits for you. A limited series you can pause; a lofi record that loops without climax.
Control. You decide the stop. Cozy media respects the door. It does not trap you in a cliffhanger you didn't consent to.
Why it is not shallow
A slow film like Tokyo Story and a farming sim share the same deepest mark: they trust you to find meaning without being pushed. That is craft, not lack of ambition. Calling it shallow usually means the critic wanted to be provoked and the work declined.
Where to start
If you want the feeling without the commitment, begin with our cozy games list or a rainy-window record. Both keep the contract. Neither will ambush you at 11pm.
Cozy is a valid evening. Possibly the most honest one.
