The streaming age trained us to confuse "more" with "better." An algorithm serves the next thing; a curator serves a reason. The difference is small in the moment and large over time.
What the algorithm optimizes
Engagement. Watch time. Click-through. These are proxies for satisfaction, and proxies drift. An algorithm will happily keep you watching something you'd admit was forgettable, because forgetting doesn't show up in the metric.
What curation optimizes
Fit. A curated list states its thesis — here is the feeling, here is why each work argues for it — and lets you disagree. The reasoning is visible. That visibility is the trust.
The honest limit
Algorithms are better at "more like this." Curation is better at "why this, and not that." We are not trying to replace the feed. We are trying to give you a sentence you can argue with — the mood-first method in practice.
Trust is built by showing the work. An algorithm hides it. That is the whole difference.
